I wanted to learn Spanish because my neighbors are Spanish-speakers and I wanted to be able to communicate better. I work at the library and it is so much easier to help them if I can speak at least a little of their native language.

Retired Physician
I oversee a clinic at Meharry that’s run by medical students. A big portion of the patient population is Spanish-speaking. They have translators, but it makes a big difference if you can meet the patient—meet the person—halfway in their native language.
Spanish Heritage Speaker
Since I moved out here to Nashville, I just started losing my Spanish. It was really poignant. Whenever I’d go home, and I would start talking to my aunts, or some of my cousins, I could just feel myself struggling with my ability to communicate.

What are classes like at Voces de Nashville?
A member-owned cooperative that trains Latina community members to teach Spanish classes to adults around our city. Our students learn conversational Spanish that native speakers right here in the Nashville area speak. All of our classes are designed so that students use what they learn to help break down language barriers and connect with more people in their local neighborhoods and workplaces.

Our classes are relaxed and comfortable, with a focus on meeting students at their level and helping them build confidence with additional grammar tools and vocabulary. Our students and teachers come from many different backgrounds, but have a common goal of wanting to converse with their community and share knowledge and culture.
